About Deer Mountain Inn

Perched on 168 wooded acres in the Great Northern Catskills above Tannersville, NY, Deer Mountain Inn is a storied mountain retreat blending turn-of-the-century charm with thoughtful, modern hospitality. Just over two hours from New York City, the property features six artfully restored guest rooms, four architect-designed standalone cabins, and a rustic, refined dining experience. Originally built in the 1880s, the inn carries a rich and colorful history—from serving as a summer camp to its rumored ties to Depression-era gangster Jack “Legs” Diamond. Since acquiring the property in 2013, Chuck and Deborah Royce have lovingly revitalized the inn, honoring its architectural heritage while creating an inviting Catskills hideaway.

The interiors, designed by Iliana Moore, draw from local vernacular, blending Arts and Crafts elements with Adirondack and alpine touches. Each space is layered with antiques, moody textures, and regional craftsmanship that echo the bohemian spirit of 19th-century artists and writers who once roamed these hills. Guests can dine fireside in the restaurant, enjoy private events in The Attic or Sunroom, or sip cocktails on the garden terrace overlooking the main lawn. The inn also houses a curated art collection of Hudson River School works, deepening its connection to the creative legacy of the region.

Beyond the inn, guests can explore private hiking trails, mountaintop lean-tos, and a variety of nearby outdoor destinations like Kaaterskill Falls, North-South Lake, and the Hunter Mountain fire tower. The charming village of Tannersville offers antique shopping, local eateries, and cultural excursions that round out the Deer Mountain Inn experience—a romantic and restorative escape rooted in history, nature, and Catskills culture.
